1937 GMC RAT ROD BUILDUP
cpmotors asked:
How to build your rod from scratch. Follow along as Scott Graves designs, fabricates, and assembles another fun hot rod out of a 1937 GMC pickup. Power comes from a 1962 235 inline 6, mates to a S10 T5, and sends it to a pair of 7.50-17 BF Goodrich tires thru the 3.08 geared rearend. Everything was fabricated in the his shop area you see with just a few basic tools.

Sick intake/exhaust manifold work, do it yourself? Your shop looked like a laboratory in the begining, so clean!

I saw this car today at Jefferson, thought it looked familiar. I was very impressed. I was most impressed w/the front axle. Was that originally a parallel leaf axle? The custom wishbones were very well done. I also liked the alcohol still inspired copper tubing details!

The main reason not to use the original frame is it would probably be alot more work to Z it low enough to get the look, and its not as rigid.
Thanks for the comments!

Thanks!
To quote my hubby’s previous replies on his father’s rod – “The floor of the cab is channeled around the frame rails to match, cab just sits over the frame, rubber bushings at mounting points for isolation.”
Yes, it is street legal, licensed and driven. What he did to get it that way- you ask? He built it as seen above applied for a hobbiest plate offered here in WI – that’s it as far as I know. – Leah

Hey. great build.
I plan to start building in the fall.
I have a few questions.
first of all, can you use your trucks original frame and just channel the body?
And is it street legal? if it is, what did you have to do to make it that way?
thanks,
poorboy

It does have a bed on it now, the photos in the slideshow are from 2006. I should add some photos with the updates to the website.
The grill shell is the orginal ‘37 I believe, the axle is a ‘51. The frame he custom built.

cool bro. you should really think about adding the bed.
I really want to build a rod. I just got done building my 72 nova and im getting into rat rods. My uncles have a 37 chevy pickup that ive been eyeing.
question;
where or what is that front clip from?

It depends on the amperage of the 110. Most small 110V powered welders can weld upto 3/16″ thick steel at the most, so that could be a limitation.
January 7th, 2009 at 7:09 am
very nice how big of a welder would it take to do the frame is a 110 to small for the square tubing or would it be pushing the welder to far

Hey Al, thanks for the comments. He was 54 when he parked it last Fall he’ll be 55 when he gets it out this Spring. I’ll be sure to get him a rubber pad…
January 9th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Well The only thing I got To say He’s got to be a Youg fella . Any one over 55 would never get out of it or in it with out a rubber pad to throw out on the concrete to get in or out on ! “Good job on the truck” .. “It ’s one to be proud of” ! Al

He trimmed the bottom off but only talked about doing the top. I think he’s a little bored with it now and looking to sell it and build the next one.
